Lounge access
Did you know that the cards in your wallet could grant you additional benefits when you fly? Corporate Traveller investigates...
As a business traveller there’s nothing nicer than being able to access the business class lounge at an airport. You can grab a refreshing shower, sip on a relaxing cocktail or catch a bite to eat. All this can be done away from the madding crowds in a sanctuary of calm and quiet. And the cards you carry in your wallet could get you free access.
Most airlines have their own lounges in major airports although they will sometimes share with an alliance partner. In some cases the lounge is reserved for those travelling in Business or First Class while others also allow access to frequent flyers who have qualified for a higher level of membership.
What you can expect from a lounge varies from one airline to the next, but in general you can expect to find the following:
- Comfortable seating in a quiet environment
- A selection of hot and cold drinks (including alcohol)
- A selection of snacks such as sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit and salad
- Wi-Fi internet access
- PCs, printers, telephones and fax machines
- Showers
- Televisions
- Newspapers and magazines
As well as airline lounges, many airports now also feature independent lounges that are open to all travellers for a small fee, regardless of airline or class of travel. The independent Bid Air Premier Club Lounges are located in both the domestic and international terminals at most South African Airports.
Certain credit cards allow free access into the Bid Air Premier Club Lounges, including:
- FNB Private Client cards
- ABSA Platinum cards
- American Express Gold cards
- Diners Club cards
- Investec Dividends cards
- Nedbank Platinum cards
Please be sure to check with your bank for more details and updated rulings on the above benefits.
